F.M.
Alexander, born 1869 in Tasmania. died London 1955.
|
F.M. Alexander was
a successful actor who developed a problem with his voice. For many years he experimented with changing his habits around
acting. This not only solved his voice problem but improved his general health and went on to become known as the Alexander
Technique. Alexander and his brother went on to develop successful practices both
in London and America. He started training teachers in his technique in 1939 and continued until his death. A number of schools of the Technique developed by his leading students grew up after his death, the
largest being STAT, Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique.

The
Alexander Technique is used by two types of people: i) An
individual with chronic pain who wants to get to the root of their problem. ii)
An individual who wants to maximise their potential and be at their best. This can be any activity such as acting, singing,
music, dance, running or swimming.

What
does a lesson in the Alexander Technique (AT) involve? The lesson will
last between 45-60 mins, in this time the student's habits are assessed, how they walk, sit, stand, talk, anything which is
relevent to why they have come for AT. The teacher points out how these habits may be contributing to lowering the student's
performance and what changes to make. The student applies their mind to changing
the habits while the teacher gently guides with their hands to change the habits. This together will change the poor habits
of the student. cost: £35 a session. contact
